The FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), are delighted to welcome you to the webinar 2020 on ‘COVID-19 and One Health: can we do better?’
The COVID-19 outbreak is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease of zoonotic origin caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2). The outbreak was firstly identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and it currently counts more than 8 million cases in over 187 countries, resulting in almost 440,000 deaths worldwide (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/). As a result of this crisis, questions have emerged concerning the efficiency of the EU system in managing this emergency. This issue also suggested the relevance to promote a One Health approach, with emphasis on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle such pandemic crisis. Previously, the One Health concept has been already identified as a priority topic by the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM) and by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE). FEAM and its European Biomedical Policy Forum jointly organised – on June 2019 – the 2nd European ONE HEALTH Conference to sustain efforts in promoting a coordinated approach across all human health-related areas in Europe. The FVE has also been in the forefront promoting One Health by launching several initiatives in the last years (FVE guidelines responsible use of antibiotics, Implementation of One Health in undergraduate education are only few examples) and actively participating in multi-stakeholder platforms and the ongoing discussions. At the EU level, this concept still represents the core of several policy initiatives – including the One Health Action Plan against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – that aim to promote preparedness efforts to tackle this major challenge.
It is widely recognized that in order to tackle key health-related challenges – such as emerging infectious diseases – the development of cross-disciplinary collaboration is needed. Today, more than ever, we comprehend the importance of the principles of One Planet, One Health, One Future to respond efficiently to the new COVID-19 pandemic challenges. This crisis has unambiguously confirmed that working together at all levels, i.e. in healthcare practice, in research and in policy-making, is fundamental for ensuring a rapid response, efficient control and quick recovery of the patients, the society and the economies. In this context, the webinar will provide to the participants the opportunity to hear from high level experts about the contributions and the impact of an integrative approach in finding solutions for a better, more efficient and faster way out from the COVID-19 crisis.
