Position paper on digital medication treatment in the European Health Data Space

On 2 March, the Alliance for the Digitalisation of Hospitals Medication Management Pathways, of which FEAM is a member, published a position paper on digital medication treatment in the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The document recognises the importance of implementing a EHDS and promotes five recommendations to the regulation proposed last year by the European Commission, "European Health Union: A European Health Data Space for People and Science".

Statement: Recommendation on Shortage of Medical Devices and Implantable Medical Devices

On 31 May 2022, the French National Academies of Medicine, Pharmacy and Surgery and the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium (ARMB) alerted the political and administrative world, all healthcare professionals and the patient community to the risk of a shortage of medical devices (MDs), particularly implantable medical devices (IMDs), by 26 May 2024. The Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM), also concerned by this important public health issue, wishes to endorse this recommendation and has joined the ongoing process.

Summary report: FEAM Forum Annual Lecture 2022 on Digital Health and AI: Benefits and Costs of Data Sharing in the EU

Data science and digital technology is rapidly evolving, holding great promise in improving healthcare systems as well as paving the way for scientific breakthroughs and innovation. The new technologies have a huge positive impact in all areas, but also lead to consequences and challenges on regulatory and policy frameworks. Whilst the world has faced the pandemic, digital technology such as telemedicine, storage of electronic medical records, virtual education and, sharing of data on emerging viruses have contributed positively towards resilience of healthcare systems. These tools build upon advances in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), provide major opportunities to push the boundaries of science and improve healthcare innovation.

Have a look at the main findings of the PERISCOPE report, ‘Best Practices in Multi-Level Governance During Pandemics: A Case Study Report’, published in June 2022. The document is a multidisciplinary study evaluating best practices in multi-level governance during time of crises, such as the covid-19 pandemic, where the focus has moved away from resilience into social infrastructures, public authority and the One Health concept instead.

FEAM Forum Annual Lecture Programme: Digital Health and AI: Benefits and Costs of Data Sharing in the EU

In this event, organized by the FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum – with the support of AstraZeneca and the European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine (EATRIS) – a discussion with expert policymakers, academics, industry and civil society representatives will provide the opportunity to exchange opinions on the impact and challenges of using new digital health technologies and sharing of data, and to identify areas of consensus and/or disagreement among experts. The 26th of October event will also feature lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for better cooperation in view of future health emergencies.

Statement by the FEAM Board on the health and biomedical research impact of the war in Ukraine

We would like to express our deep concern for loss of life and the potential humanitarian disaster triggered by the war in Ukraine. We express solidarity with the people of Ukraine and with scientists and physicians whose livelihood and research are jeopardized and may be destroyed by the current Russian invasion. We call on our National Academies to express their solidarity with the biomedical community in Ukraine and to highlight the need to maintain and provide adequate support for continued research cooperation and training during these chaotic times.

Group of Chief Scientific Advisors Scientific Opinion on Cancer Screening in the European Union

This scientific opinion of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA), published on 2 March 2022, informed by an evidence review report by experts of the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) consortium, and extensive reviews of scientific literature and clinical trials through rapid reviews, examines how to improve cancer screening in Europe.

Improving Cancer Screening in the European Union – SAPEA ERR

In a comprehensive evidence review published on 2 March, SAPEA – part of the Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism – evaluates improvements to existing screening programmes for cervical cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer — by adopting new technologies, expanding the age range of screening, and optimising how frequently people are screened depending on age, sex and previous test results.
